Este texto en lengua española, corresponde a la quinta edición (1987), revisada y ampliada por Mark De Voto, de este clásico tratado de armonía con el que se han formado generaciones de estudiantes de música.
El libro presenta, con la mayor brevedad posible, la práctica armónica común de los compositores de los siglos XVIII y XIX. Las reglas se presentan como observaciones informativas, sin intentar justificarlas sobre fundamentos estéticos o como leyes de la naturaleza. Con estos principios se consigue una rápida y lógica comprensión de la materia.
Su núcleo trata de forma exhaustiva un curso de armonía tonal, con numerosos ejemplos, la exposición de las distintas tendencias entorno al ritmo armónico, la estructura de la frase musical y los métodos analíticos.
La obra se conoce desde hace tiempo como libro de texto introductorio pero, debido a su carácter global, sirve también como libro de consulta tanto de profesores como de alumnos.
Walter Piston estudió en la Universidad de Harvard y en París fue alumno de Dukas. De 1944 a 1960 enseñó en la Cátedra de Música W. Naumberg de Harvard. Es uno de los compositores contemporáneos de los Estados Unidos más interpretados y ganó dos premios Pulitzer por sendas sinfonías.
